PDT Enhanced Treatments
Treat actinic keratosis, acne and reduce fine lines and wrinkles with PDT
PDT laser represents the cutting edge of research in light based medicine, and works in two stages:
- A photosensitizer is applied to the skin, and the body converts this into a chemical (often the naturally occurring chemical Protoporphyrin IX or PpIX).
- The PpIX created a response to light within a certain waveband, provided by the Ellipse PR 530 or PL 400 applicators.
Two of the Ellipse SWT applicators are approved as the Light source for PDT treatments of the skin. The PR 530 applicator is already known for its use vascular and photo rejuvenation treatments. This applicator matches three of the PpIX absorption peaks, allowing a photochemical pathway to be added to existing acne and photo rejuvenation treatments.
Because of the wavelengths and pulse times used, the PR 530 applicator is suitable for patients of Fitzpatrick Skin Types 1 to 3, with zero or light suntan. The PL 400 applicator – the latest addition to the Ellipse PLUS series – matches all 5 PpIX absorption peaks. By offering a series of longer, low energy passes, it offers a comfortable PDT treatment suitable for slightly more tanned patients, or those of Skin Types 1 to 4.

There are numerous peer-reviewed clinical abstracts that show the safety and effectiveness of PDT treatments. A large number of these involve using a specific photosensitizer in a treatment such as rejuvenation, acne and actinic keratosis.
